*BONUS* The Office Proposal

“The boat was actually Plan C, the church was Plan B, and Plan A was marrying her a long, long time ago...

Pretty much the day I met her.”

My fiancé knows me all too well, and proposed to me on The Maid of the Mist because of my favorite show The Office; if you know, YOU KNOW! I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal; he did SO good! It was worth every minute of the wait, and I’m so lucky to have a partner who knows me, and put forth the effort to give me this amazing memory that I won’t ever forget. (Even though I kinda blacked out a little, haha!) And he KNEW.. with me being a photographer, I wanted this moment to be captured because otherwise he would’ve been in trouble, lol.. he had two of his cousins taking pictures of us while this was happening. And let me just tell you, I look at those pictures all the time and all they do is take me back to that moment. With that said, here are some tips on how to make your proposal extra special!

The proposal of my dreams..

  • DIG DEEP, PEOPLE! Try to keep in mind things that your partner truly loves, or cares about and try to incorporate that into your proposal whether that be things you do together, a special spot that you share (it could be where you had your first kiss, where you first said ‘I love you’, your favorite vacation spot together, etc.), or something that’s truly special to them specifically.

  • If you’ve got a group of people with you like how Josh did for me, or you’re planning on hiring a professional photographer, make sure there’s a plan set in place like a codeword, an act, or some kind of signal that you’re about to pop the question.

  • HIDE. THE. RING. Give it to someone trustworthy enough so that your partner doesn’t accidentally find it in a drawer or closet!

  • BE. SMART. In our case, Josh proposed to me on a boat. If you’re going to be in an area where there could be a chance of losing the ring like in sand, a forest/wooded area, or in this case, water, get yourself a fake one and then give your fiancé the real one at a later time. A $10 fake ring will do just fine - I promise! (The fake ring he proposed with was 100% not my style and in my opinion, tacky AF, and I still said yes, sooo….. lol come to find out, he did that on purpose, and that’s one of the many reasons why I love him so much and his sense of humor! hahahahah :D)

  • And if you’re REALLY nervous, PRACTICE. It may sound silly, but it could help you become less nervous! Practice what you want to say, and doing the physical act of getting down on your knee (tip: traditionally, your left knee goes on the ground ;))

  • With that said, speak from the heart :) as someone who hates speaking in front of crowds, when I speak about something I’m passionate about, I don’t stumble with my words as much, and my words typically flow better that way!

After all that and you’re still stumped with these tips and you still have absolutely NO idea what to do for your partner, just know that it doesn’t have to be this insanely spectacular proposal; all that matters is that you have each other and this beautiful moment together. And if these tips DO help you form an idea on how you want to propose, I would love to be a part of your moment together so you can look back on them for years to come! If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to reach out and get some advice from your photographer friend (me! :))

xoxo, Dana
